  • Sedentary lifestyle leads to low back pain

In Expert Diet Tips On 24 August 2016

People who are not involved in any physical activity on regular basis are prone to low back pain, especially during times when they suddenly perform stressful, unfamiliar activities. Activities like lifting heavy items or moving them from one place to another, shoveling, digging etc. Among women, this complaint is more prevalent since they tend to lift heavy grocery bags while wearing high heels. Lack of exercise leads to following conditions that may threaten your back While moving heavy items, muscles are not strong enough or fully involved in such activities and this increases the load on the spine and hence the risk of disk compression. People who are overweight or obese, tend to put more weight on the spine and this in turn increases pressure on the vertebrae and disk It has also been observed that weak stomach muscles can increase the strain on back and cause abnormal tilt of the pelvis. Inflexible muscles can restrict the backs ability to move, rotate and bend. However, on the flip side of the coin improper or excessive exercise can also cause chronic back pain. To begin with, start exercising slowly, considering it a part of a broader program. Repetition is the key in increasing flexibility, building endurance and strengthening the specific muscles needed to support the spine. Few of the exercises, which are necessary in building strong muscles would be low impact aerobic exercises such as swimming, bicycling, walking, which would strengthen muscles in the abdomen without overstraining the back. Lumbar extension strength training is proving to be effective. Generally these exercises attempt to strengthen the abdomen and improve lower back mobility. They also enhance flexibility in the hip and in the tendons at the back of the thigh. Yoga, Tai-Chi also combines low impact physical movements and meditation. They are based on the principle of disciplining the mind to achieve a physical and mental balance and can be very helpful in preventing recurrence of low back pain..

  • Is Dark Chocolate Healthy Option for you ?

In Expert Diet Tips On 24 August 2016

Chocolate is enjoyed and relished by all age groups. Starting from age 2 onwards, it is eaten in all forms as a chocolate piece, chocolate sauce or a dip with ice cream or chocolate cake. Many international companies are manufacturing different kinds of chocolates as milk, white or dark chocolate. It has been researched in many Universities that dark chocolate has many health benefits. Dark chocolate made from cocoa beans, is rich in a class of plant nutrients called flavonoids. The main type of flavonoids, which have antioxidant qualities is flavonol, which have been shown to lower blood pressure, boost blood flow and reduce blood clots. These are same kind of substances that are found in red wine, tea, grape juice. Another way chocolate may provide cardiovascular benefits is by assisting with nitric oxide metabolism. Nitric oxide protects your heart by relaxing your blood vessels and thereby lowering blood pressure. Cocoa polyphenols protects our body from these metabolites.   The flavonoids in dark chocolate also reduce insulin resistance by helping your cells to function normally and regain the ability to use your body's insulin efficiently. Dark chocolate also has a low glycemic index. Dark chocolate often contains some sugar, but the amount are usually small and darker the chocolate, the less amount of sugar it will contain. To receive all these health benefits, one should choose the right type and kind. It is a myth that all dark chocolate are good for you. Sugar is often the first ingredient listed on many dark chocolate bars. Instead you want a dark chocolate that has cocoa solids. A good rule is to look for at least 70% cocoa solids, which means that chocolate should have a slightly bitter taste. Much like any other dessert, milk chocolate is one of the most loved treats eaten at any time of the day. But unlike dark chocolate, milk chocolate contains ingredients that make it an unhealthy dessert choice. It contains considerable amount of sweeteners like processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Excessive consumption of these sweeteners may bring about tooth decay and serious illness like insulin resistance, which would lead to over weight issues and diabetes. High fructose corn syrup has also been linked to gastro-intestinal maladies, head-aches, hyper activity.  However, white chocolate is not even considered a chocolate by U.S. Food and Drug administration because of its lack of cocoa. Another reason is that it contains a large amount of sugar. While dark chocolate offers a lot of benefits, it can also sometimes have some draw-backs. 1. Its high in caffeine 2. If you suffer from intestines or regular migraine headaches, you may want to avoid chocolate. It contains tyramine, a natural chemical that has been linked to migrain. 3. One should avoid drinking it with milk because dark chocolate can reduce the anti oxidant impact because milk binds with antioxidants and keeps them away from doing their job. Take Home Message   There is considerable evidence that cocoa can provide powerful health benefits, being protective against cardiovascular disease. This does not mean that people can go all out and consume lots of chocolate everyday. It is still loaded with calories and easy to overeat on. Keep in mind also that chocolate confections are also loaded with sugar, fat, and calories. Many of them have caramel, nougat and other unhealthy fillings and ingredients. Even if it is rich in flavonoids, think of chocolate as a treat, not a health food, because it is calorie dense. Fruits and vegetables are better source of flavonoids on a daily basis-they have fewer calories and abundance of vitamins and minerals and fiber. Whenever dark chocolate should be bought keep an eye on calorie and sugar content.

  • Is Detoxification the Right Approach?

In Health Tips On 24 August 2016

Detox diets are generally short-term dietary interventions designed to eliminate toxins from the body. A typical detox diet involves a period of fasting, followed by a strict diet of fruits, vegetables, fruit juices and water. At times your health care provider also include herbs, teas, supplements and colon cleanses in your detox diet. This is aimed to: Rest the organs by fasting. Stimulate the liver to get rid of toxins. Promotes toxin elimination through urine, sweat and feces. Improves circulation and also provides body with healthy nutrients. Detox diets are most commonly recommended because of exposure to toxic chemicals in the environment or diet. These include pollutants, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals and other harmful compounds. These diets are also claimed to help with various health problems, including obesity, digestive issues, autoimmune diseases, inflammation, allergies, bloating and chronic fatigue. There are many ways of going through a detox diet Fasting for 1-3 days. Drinking fresh fruits and vegetable juices, smoothies, water and tea. Avoiding all allergenic foods and then slowly re introducing them Completely eliminating alcohol, coffee, cigarettes and refined sugar The different detox diets vary in intensity and duration. Detox diet and weight loss Some people may lose a lot of weight quickly, this seems to be due to loss of fluids and carbs stores, rather than fat. This weight is usually regained quickly once you start eating again. If a detox diet involves severe calorie restrictions, then it will most certainly cause weight loss and improvements in metabolic health. However this type of crash dieting will not lead to long term results unless you make it a lifestyle change. Beneficial Aspects of Detox Diet There are few aspects of detox diet that may have health benefits Eliminating C toxins from body fat by losing excessive fat. Exercising and sweating regularly. Eating, whole, nutritious and healthy food. Avoiding processed food. Drinking water and green tea Limiting stress and getting good sleep. Over Dosing 1. Gastrointestinal Side Effects Diarrhea is a common side effect of a detox cleanse. In fact it is said that diarrhea is a sign your body is getting rid of toxic substances. However, diarrhea is most likely caused by sugar from fresh juice. 2. Dangerous Side Effects A detox cleanse can be harmful to your health. Today%u2019s dietitian/health care provider claims that a long term detox diet, that si not closely supervised by a medical professional may lead to severe electrolyte imbalance, which may cause life threatening heart problems. 3. Detox Cleanse Not For Everyone Some people should avoid detox cleanse altogether because of its potential impact on their overall health. A detox cleanse for teens, may effect growth and is not recommended. People with chronic illnesses, such as heart disease or diabetes and pregnant women should also avoid detox cleanse.
